What is the typical lifespan of a memory card?

BlackboxMyCar Updated by BlackboxMyCar

MicroSD cards are consumable items. Due to the stress and build up of bad blocks (spaces on the memory card that files can no longer be stored at) and the aggressive constant overwriting cycles, SD's typically have a lifetime of 8-12 months with regular formatting. The higher the image quality, the heavier the toll on the SD card.

When corrupt memory cards are inserted in our dash cams, the device continually restarts in an attempt to allocate space on the card to save its files. Another indication that the SD card has gone corrupt is hearing the device say "Memory Card Error."

If you believe that the SD Card is beginning to become corrupt, insert the card into your home computer. If the Card is unable to be properly formatted it is time to replace this SD.

If you are concerned about the longevity of your SD card, it's always helpful to give it a good scrub, and fully format the SD card every couple of months. This is not required at all, and many of our customers don't but it can be healthy for the card. There's even a setting in our Viofo cameras to notify you when to reformat the SD card after multiple months of use!
