How do I format my microSD card?Updated 6 days ago

If you have just purchased a new microSD card to use with your dash cam, we recommend formatting it on your computer first.

Most of the time, the SD card will come pre-formatted with no data on board. Simply insert it into the dash cam and power it on.

Some new SD cards have files from the manufacturer or come in the wrong file system format for the dash cam. These are the SD cards that need to be formatted.

If the dash cam announces or displays that the SD card needs to be formatted, you will also need to format it.

Follow the instructions below to format the SD card on your computer:

This will delete everything on the SD card, so please make sure to save any important files first.

Windows PC:

  1. Remove the SD card from your dashcam and put it in your computer.
  2. Locate the SD card in File Explorer.
  3. Format the SD card by right-clicking on it and clicking "format".
  4. Ensure the file system is FAT 32 (32GB or smaller) or exFAT (64GB or larger).
  5. Ensure the allocation size is 32kb (32GB or smaller) or 128kb (64GB or larger).
  6. Click "Start" to proceed with the format.
For BlackVue dash cams, the SD card must be in the FAT32 file system regardless of its size. As Windows cannot natively format cards larger than 32GB into FAT32, the BlackVue PC Viewer must be used.

Mac:

  1. Remove the SD card from your dashcam and put it in your computer.
  2. Launch Disk Utility, then locate and select the SD card from the left sidebar.
  3. Click "erase" at the top of the Disk Utility window.
  4. In the pop-up window, choose the appropriate file system:
    1. MS-DOS (FAT32) (32GB or smaller, or if the card is to be used in a BlackVue)
    2. exFAT (64GB or larger for all other brands).
  5. Click the "Erase" button to proceed with the format.
