My dash cam doesn't know when to switch to parking mode when using a battery pack!Updated 4 hours ago

To ensure your dash cam properly switches to parking mode when the vehicle is turned off, you need a spliced battery output cable with a 3-wire connection to connect your dash cam to your battery pack. This cable is crucial for signalling the dash cam when the vehicle's ignition is turned off, thereby enabling the parking mode.

A spliced output cable is typically created by splicing the dash cam's hardwire kit into the battery pack's unspliced output cable.

For a detailed guide on the splicing process, check out our splicing guide here.

If you have a dash cam from one of the three major brands (BlackVue, Thinkware, or VIOFO), consider a pre-spliced output cable. These are included with the BlackVue B-130A (for the BlackVue X-Series only), and can be found here or bundled with the PowerCell 8 for the other brands.

However, this is not required for BlackVue and some VIOFO dash cams, which can also switch in and out of parking mode if they detect that the vehicle has been stationary for more than 5 minutes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to check to ensure your connection is correct:

1. Identify the 3-Wire Connection:

  • Power Wire (BATT+, usually Red or Yellow): Supplies constant power to the dash cam.
  • Ground Wire (Black): Connects to the vehicle’s chassis for grounding.
  • Ignition Wire (ACC, usually Red or Yellow): Detects when the vehicle is turned on or off.

2. Testing the Connection:

  • During installation, ensure the Power and Ignition wires are properly connected. Sometimes, the colours of the wires may differ between the dash cam's hardwiring kit and the battery pack's output cable.
  • After installation, start your vehicle to ensure the dash cam and battery pack power on normally.
  • Turn off the vehicle and observe if the dash cam switches to parking mode. This transition should be automatic.
  • Check the battery pack's Bluetooth app, and ensure that it only charges when the vehicle is running.

3. Adjust Settings:

  • Depending on your dash cam model, you might need to adjust the settings to ensure it recognizes the ignition signal correctly. Refer to the dash cam’s manual for specific configuration steps.
